Do I need to know ZPL to design a label?
No. You place text, barcodes, lines, and images on a canvas by dragging, and the designer writes the ZPL template for you — the ^XA…^XZ commands, field positioning (^FO), and graphic encoding all happen behind the scenes. The result is clean, native ZPL you can read, version, and send to any ZPL printer.
Can I edit an existing ZPL template instead of starting from scratch?
Yes. Import ZPL from another designer, a printer capture, or a legacy project, and it becomes a visual, editable template — objects stay objects rather than being flattened into images. You can also paste ZPL straight into the web-based ZPL editor if you prefer working at the code level.
Is the output limited to Zebra printers?
No — the designer is printer-agnostic. Its native template format is ZPL, which the overwhelming majority of thermal printers understand (Zebra, and printers with ZPL emulation from Honeywell, TSC, SATO, and others). You can also print via a PDF export to any non-thermal printer, or push WMS-native formats like Blue Yonder .POF.
How do I preview what the label will print like?
The designer renders with the same engine behind LabelZoom's web tools, so the on-screen preview matches the printed output — including density: switch between 203 and 300 dpi to see what the same template looks like on different hardware before you commit stock to it.
Does it run on macOS or in the browser?
The Label Designer is a native Windows desktop application, built for offline and on-shop-floor use. If you need something in the browser, the ZPL editor and ZPL viewer cover quick code edits and previews — and there is a private-beta cloud print service for triggering prints from web apps.
